See Johnny Run! The first chapter of The Fantastic Voyages of Johnny Shallow, Exit At The Axis is about crossroads, self-awareness, and a young man so driven to get to his destination, he fails to see where it might take him... or what follows close behind.
Johnny Shallow is a journalism student from Vancouver, Canada... and his goal for the winter break is straightforward: get to Portland, Oregon for a Social Action conference over New Year's Eve... and see the girl of his (day) dreams, Trudi Montague. But, before he departs, Johnny unknowingly -- and accidentally -- foils a kidnapping plot, attracting the attention of the mysterious Windfall Gang! They pursue after him, trying to catch up, even as his journey intersects with friends, strangers, and unforeseen disasters. All the various paths converge for the climax in -- where else? -- the city of ports, Portland.
My first minicomic series, Exit At The Axis is a completed 160-page comic story told in eight issues, each 20 pages long. Click here to learn more about Exit At The Axis!

People have opinions, but people also sometimes talk to plants. Here's what some people have said online about Exit At The Axis: "Paul Sloboda's natural knack for page design blends in perfectly with the different narrative techniques he uses. For instance, parts of the story are told through journal entries or through the protagonist's eyes. I'm impressed by Paul's smart use of unique camera angles, which he exploits for impact. This expertly crafted story arc builds to a fever pitch and is best digested all at once.... I strongly urge you not to miss this remarkable work." - Musea (formerly called "Assblaster"... I believe...) • "Doesn't look particularly fabulous, but the guy was really charming and he was busting his ass without resorting to the dreaded hard sell. I wanted to support him, so I made a purchase. Might end up being wonderful - who knows?" - Kelly Sue DeConnick http://www.kellysue.com/ • "Eata, you snot-nose, I thought I'd never see you again! ...I completely didn't expect where the story went after issue 6 (which was where it left off when I lost sight of it) and I'm awfully frustrated that the sequel Fool's Errand is on hiatus, but what are you going to do? Exit at the Axis is very very vaguely akin to Demo, possibly only by accident, but it's the only comparison I can come up with." - something called "Zzz" http://vex.net/~smarry/ • "Exit at the Axis: a gracefully drawn story of a young man's increasing political awareness as he becomes embroiled in a conspiracy. The protagonist's ideals awaken and are challenged as he pursues his journalistic interests. Confidently told." - Greg M. Smith |
